Local cell manufacturer powers to 500 per cent production increase
09th April 2003
Thurso based AGM Batteries Ltd (AGM) today announced a 500 per cent increase in output from its hi-tech cell manufacturing plant over the past six months. This rapid increase in production has been achieved in response to a sharp rise in demand for AGM's world-leading Kaizen cell from customers in the key defence and medical markets.
AGM is a joint venture between AEA Technology plc, and its Japanese partners Japan Storage Battery Co., Ltd and Mitsubishi Materials Corporation.
"This fantastic achievement is due to our investment in the very best technology as well as the skills and professionalism of our Thurso workforce and the contribution of our Japanese partners," says Tony Jeffery, managing director of AGM. "Our vision is to continue developing our cell technology to meet the energy demands of all our customers. Our on-going investment programme will ensure that AGM remains the market leader and Thurso is recognised as a global centre of excellence in cell design, development and manufacture."
The AGM Lithium-ion Kaizen cell is the market leader with its very high energy for its size and weight, its temperature performance (operates as low as –51°C), and its ruggedness. AGM continues to invest in product and process improvement. A recent example is the upgrading of the laser welding process which ensures perfect sealing of the cell. This is vital for the high level of reliability required by users such as the military.
AGM is currently undergoing a month-long programme of facility improvement work, the upgrade of its quality systems, and the introduction of further Japanese working practices. This will be completed in May when the plant will resume operations.
