ABSL to Suppor General Dynamics UK’s Roll Out of BOWMAN Export to the Royal Netherlands Navy

26th September 2005

AEA Technology Battery Systems Ltd (ABSL) has agreed a £1.4 million contract with General Dynamics UK Limited, to supply the power systems for the New Integrated Marines Communications and Information System (NIMCIS) which General Dynamics UK Limited has recently been awarded by the Royal Netherlands Navy.

Under the two-year contract, ABSL will supply batteries, chargers and ancillary equipment for NIMCIS which will equip the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps (RNLMC) with the BOWMAN C4I system, which is currently being rolled out by General Dynamics UK Limited to the UK Armed Forces.  NIMCIS will provide the RNLMC with a secure voice and data communications infrastructure capable of supporting a range of network-enabled command, control, communications, computing and intelligence systems.  In addition and crucially, NIMCIS will provide interoperability between the Netherlands and UK forces.

ABSL, Managing Director, Paul Brown commented:

“This is the first in what we hope will be a series of Bowman export contracts, with the Dutch being the first to follow the UK’s lead.  This new contract further strengthens AEA’s relationship with General Dynamics and other companies within the Bowman team.”

Ian Menzies, Programme Director, NIMCIS, of General Dynamics UK Limited said:

“We are delighted to have won our first BOWMAN export contract using the existing Bowman team.  This is a major success for General Dynamics UK Limited and subcontractors like ABSL, and confirms that BOWMAN is a battlefield discriminator.”

ABSL originally won the £40 million sole supply contract for the UK MoD’s new Bowman Battlefield Communications System by General Dynamics UK Limited in March 2002.  Under this contract, ABSL advises on all portable power systems requirements and supplies the batteries and chargers for the Bowman system.  ABSL won the contract based on its expertise in rechargeable Lithium-ion battery technology, the use of which on Bowman represents the first large scale deployment of Lithium-ion for operational use.
