Glengarnock Welcomes Minister for Armed Forces
23rd February 2007
Leading UK portable power developer and manufacturer, ABSL Power Solutions Ltd (ABSL) today welcomed the UK Armed Forces Minister, Adam Ingram, to its Glengarnock design and manufacturing facility where it revealed its next generation of military portable power systems.
ABSL outlined to the Minister the advances it has made towards becoming a centre of excellence for portable power in the UK, and how it is achieving its vision to become a key strategic partner to the UK MoD in line with the Defence Industrial Strategy. The company recently made major inroads towards achieving this by winning two substantial MoD contracts. The first is as Prime Contractor of a funded Technology Development Programme with QinetiQ plc, to mature technology for the next generation of portable power systems, and the second contract involves the development of a flexible and conformable power source offering greater ergonomic benefits to the user.
ABSL Managing Director, John Cowley said “We’ve made a substantial investment in developing a new range of products and systems for both military and commercial use at the Ayrshire facility, which employs 21 of the total 150 company employees. These products and systems are lighter and more powerful than technology currently used by armed forces. Power is critical to the success of future military programmes such as the UK MoD’s Future Integrated Soldier Technology (FIST) programme and other similar Soldier Modernisation Programmes around the world. We are confident that our unique approach to the management of power will deliver the necessary operational and tactical enhancements, while reducing the physical and logistical burden on the soldier. We are delighted to have the opportunity to showcase to the Armed Forces Minister, the results of our investment to date and to outline our winning strategy to deliver portable power into the future for both military and commercial users.”
Minister AF Adam Ingram said “I am delighted to see at first hand the work carried out here at ABSL. The military portable power systems manufactured by ABSL play a crucial role in a range of defence applications.”
ABSL is already a key supplier to UK MoD, designing and manufacturing world leading portable power systems in Scotland since 2001. The company currently supplies the batteries and chargers for the UK MoD’s Bowman battlefield communications system, and is building a global customer base within the world defence market and increasingly in more commercial environments such as the space, marine, oil and gas and consumer markets.
