Metop-A launched Carrying ABSL calibration system
19th October 2006
MetOp-A was successfully launched by a Soyouz ST rocket with a Fregat upper stage on the 19th of October. This spacecraft, developed by a consortium of European companies led by the main contractor EADS-Astrium, will allow a better understanding of our climate change and a more accurate weather forecasting.
Carrying a set of 7 ‘heritage’ American instruments and 5 new advanced European devices, Metop-A will provide accurate vertical profiles of temperature and humidity, as well as wind speed and direction measurements over the ocean.
ABSL Space Products has been involved in the design of the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), providing the IR calibration blackbody and associated electronics. ABSL has also been chosen to provide the two other MetOp spacecraft (EPS) with the blackbody subsystems and the associated electronics. On the 2nd November 2006, ESA confirmed that all the onboard instruments had been successfully switched on.
