ABSL delivers first batteries for OHB SAR Lupe programme
02nd August 2006
ABSL delivers the first set of flight batteries for the SAR-Lupe program to OHB in Germany. ABSL has so far been awarded contracts to supply batteries for the first four, of an eventual constellation of five, satellites.
The SAR Lupe programme consists of five satellites launched at six-month intervals. The programme has a 10-year duration in LEO orbit. With its high-resolution radar SAR-Lupe provides a repetitive, worldwide reconnaissance capability with perfect picture quality, independent of weather and lighting conditions.
Nickel Hydrogen batteries were originally purchased for this programme but logistical problems lead to OHB enquiring about alternative battery solutions.
ABSL proposed a build to print design, using two existing 8s44p CryoSat modules per satellite to minimise lead-time, and were awarded the contract to supply a 60% scale EM within 5 weeks and the FM1 modules within 14 weeks. This programme provides a good illustration of ABSL’s flexibility and ability to deliver within the most demanding time constraints. The first satellite, carrying ABSL Lithium-ion, is due for launch on 19th December 2006.
