ABSL Qualifies First Primary Battery Design
15th September 2006
ABSL Space qualifies its first primary battery design. The battery will power critical life science experiments during re-entry and over twelve hours of post-deorbit operation that will be essential for safe recovery. This battery utilizes the ABSL 33111PR cell.
The ABSL 33111PR cell is a high energy density (450 Wh/kg), primary cell, suited to low power, high-energy applications. Typical space applications for the ABSL 33111PR are providing auxiliary power to maintain instrument operation or providing power for one shot Lander operations.
The qualified primary battery is a 9s3p configuration. The similar aspect ratio of the ABSL 33111PR cell compared to the heritage 18650HC cell allows ABSL to use the same packaging methodology, flight proven on 20 missions.
